¡Altamente recomendada!

Experiencia fantástica: I studied here for a week and wish we could have stayed longer! I chose group immersive classes, 4 hours a day. My teacher, Saul, was wonderful. I appreciated his kind and patient attitude while still challenging my group and encouraging us to learn a lot in a short amount of time. He kept the class engaged and entertaining, with conversations moving naturally and a lot of speaking practice. The school itself is very welcoming and located in a great area. The coffee was delicious and I enjoyed the home cooked lunch for purchase on one day - it was lovely! I would highly recommend La Calle to anyone looking for a short or long term Spanish program. Many students stay for many weeks and all the people I talked to had seen so much improvement in their Spanish. If I return to Merida, I would absolutely attend classes again!

Experiencia fantástica: I had a wonderful week at La Calle Spanish school and would recommend this to solo travelers, couples, or families who would like to have a fun and useful way to start their days; this often is a great way to also meet fellow travelers, if that is per your inclination, or to find out about events in the area. The school accepts students of levels and will test and place you accordingly, making it accessible to all and a great place for beginners as well as those wishing to refine their Spanish. I believe they were offering classes of four levels during my stay, and classes seemed to accommodate 4-5 students, making it an excellent instructor to student ratio My instructor, Giovanna, was extremely skilled at teaching, knowledgeable, and professional. As a former EFL teacher with over 5000 hours of tutoring experience, I can confidently say she understands language as well as how to teach it. Classes were paced well and were primarily focused on conversation, which would be structured or guided to practice/reinforce key concepts and correct grammar. The school is extremely nice, clean, and well stocked, and they even provide handmade lunch at a reasonable rate each day as well as providing free water and coffee. I was also impressed by their progressive ethos. I would definitely come again if I was traveling in the area as it was a great compliment to my trip. Thank you again!

Experiencia fantástica: I studied at Calle Language School for three weeks, and it was an incredible experience. The teachers are amazing—patient, encouraging, and genuinely invested in your progress. They created an environment where I felt comfortable learning and making mistakes, which made a huge difference. During my time there, my Spanish skills improved dramatically. I left feeling more confident and motivated to keep going. I plan to continue studying with them online until I return in a few months. I highly recommend Calle to anyone serious about learning Spanish.

Experiencia fantástica: I spent four weeks at La Calle School and had such an amazing experience, all the teachers and staff were so friendly and helpful. I had such a great time with my fellow students in the beautiful city of Mérida, but, most importantly, my Spanish has improved considerably thanks to the great learning environment at La Calle.

Experiencia fantástica: I was in a fairly advanced class where the 2 hours a day flew by as we listened. read, summarized, opined, and wrote about a variety of very interesting current topics IN SPANISH! I stretched and grew my Spanish fluency. Great city and very cool school.

Experiencia fantástica: La Calle is FANTASTIC. All the teachers are smart, engaged, animated and fun; the vibe is friendly, and we learned a ton of Spanish. It's definitely the best language learning experience I've ever had.

Experiencia positiva: What a wonderful place to learn Spanish! I was in a small, advanced class with two other students. We had the opportunity to develop our conversational skills with guided discussions of varied topics. Along the way, the instructor gently corrected our grammar and vocabulary. Loved it! The only negative was that it was super hot in Merida, and the school has no AC.

Experiencia fantástica: The La Calle experience has been great. I've spent 2 weeks in the semi- intensive immersion program. The school itself is a lovely community space and the immersive style of teaching has been fun and really effective in advancing my Spanish skills. Saul is a kind and patient teacher, and it has been uplifting to meet and connect with the other students in the class.

Experiencia fantástica: I had an excellent experience studying for two weeks at La Calle in Mérida. The teachers were professional, warm, and incredibly supportive. They created an environment where I felt comfortable speaking Spanish, even when I wasn’t completely confident. The school itself is a wonderful place to spend time. I enjoyed connecting with other students and hearing their stories about living in Mexico. There’s a strong sense of community that makes learning feel natural and engaging. All of my professors were superb. By the end of my stay, I felt noticeably more confident speaking Spanish. The teaching approach was very different from the classes I’ve taken in the United States — more immersive and intuitive — and it truly helped things click for me. I finally gained a solid understanding of the subjunctive, which had always been challenging. The school also serves a delicious afternoon lunch, and it’s genuinely a pleasure to be there each day. I would highly recommend La Calle to anyone looking to learn Spanish in a welcoming, comfortable environment.

I also appreciated taking advantage of the extra curricular activities such as cooking class, cantina tour and excursion to the beach. Overall comfortable vibe. I highly recommend La Calle Spanish school!!!

Experiencia fantástica: I studied at La Calle for 2 weeks in December. It is a cheerful building with fans in each room and I was comfortable the entire time. The teachers have a lot of years at the school and like to teach Spanish. I had 2 different teachers with different styles and both were great. The school offered granola, yogurt and fruit for breakfast for 60 pesos and a different lunch everyday for 120 pesos. So yummy and Erika, the cocinera, is wonderful. I stayed at Hotel del Peregrino, a few blocks from the school, and it was delightful. It is a small refurbished colonial home with great charm, fast wifi, hot water, and AC with dedicated employees plus access to water, ice, microwave and a refrigerator. The school combined with the hotel made for a great vacation in Mérida.

Experiencia positiva: I spent 3 months at la calle. The positives: The teachers. They are amazing. I can tell that they like their job and it motivated me even more to keep learning Spanish. The lunch is so amazing. Erica is always doing a good job offering delicious vegetarian meals. Each week is different. I also felt that they focused enough on more complicated parts of the languages by repeating classes. I thought it was great that the teachers acknowledged the people who stayed longer to make sure that the classes they took weren't the same each week because a lot of people only stay for a short period. Private lessons were great. Giovanna for example was really nice. Time flew by and during the private lesson she really make sure you will cover what you want to learn. She is a great teacher and I hope to see her again in my future trip! The school also offers tours and trips almost daily and each weekend there is a larger optional tour. The ones that I took were great. The guide was great and the driver as well. Usually it's the same person and I learnt a lot and enjoyed each trip. The negative: The state of the school is bad. The school seems like they barely cared to get it up to quality. The garden is nice, but the classrooms are poorly painted and incredibly hot. You can imagine that a lot of their clients are from the US or European countries where temperatures are lower. The fact that there is no air-conditioning can be very difficult to endure. I was there before the hottest moment of the year and I can imagine that for older people, being here from May to August can be quite difficult. The acoustics are what bothered me the most when I was there during the busy time. It muffles the sound of the teacher, though it is manageable, it's not great. Sometimes we did one on one exercises in pairs with a group of 7, and you can imagine that when you speak a language that you don't master and you have other people speak with echoes going around, it can be more challenging that it has to be. The school should offer air-conditioning and cold water for the students. It's little effort, but I find it essential. Especially during peak-heat, it's not acceptable that the school offers nothing at all to accommodate the foreign students. Almost the entire city has it, but the school doesn't. And they ask enough money for me to expect this, but they don't offer it. I've been told that the owner of the school doesn't even live in Mexico and it shows. I have been told that they used to have a better location and that they don't want to invest in the current one. I don't know if this is true, but it really seems like it. Other students have complained about it, but because they only stay for 2 weeks, the school gets away with it because they don't feel like complaining about it because the teachers themselves are great. And I disagree with this. The school needs to improve this. That's the reason for the 3 stars. It is that important for them to change it.

Experiencia fantástica: This is my second trip to the Calle. The atmosphere and the maestros are amazing. I particularly enjoyed Miguel's class. He is such an attentive and sharp teacher. He has a way of helping you work on your grammar and making it really fun at the same time. My other teacher Saul was also great. Above all, this school is just such a lovely place to study. I hated to leave as it was so much fun and such a nice learning environment.

Experiencia fantástica: This last November, I had the good fortune to study at La Calle - Spanish School for two weeks, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The school overall is rather small with a handful of classrooms plus a few bright and airy common spaces. As mentioned in other reviews there is the option to order the lunch each day which was always freshly made, delicious and provided a great opportunity to meet and get to know the other students studying. The school also offers activities and excursions each week that are really organized which again allows you the opportunity to socialize with other students which can really add to the trip when traveling as a couple or on your own. The teachers were all passionate and engaging, also, the policy of rotating teachers weekly to different classes is excellent way of keeping things fresh and to experience different teaching styles. I have studied Spanish abroad previously and without a doubt La Calle ranks as one of the best schools I’ve attended. P.S. My wife and I stayed at Hotel Luz en Yucatan while in Merida which is just 200 meters north of the school and it was fabulous. If you’re planning on studying at the school read the reviews for Luz and consider staying there, easily one of the best parts of our trip.

Experiencia fantástica: I spent two weeks studying at La Calle and had a wonderful time. I can communicate in Spanish but my grammar is poor, and I got a lot of practice and support from the teachers, which is exactly what I needed. I had Giovanna one week and Saul the next, totally different styles, both were great!

Experiencia fantástica: I studied at La Calle for 3 weeks and it was the most amazing experience - truly life changing! The teachers were spectacular - I had a different teacher each week by design, and each one was wonderful. Everyone was warm and helpful and my Spanish improved exponentially. I am currently planning to continue my studying with La Calle online. They are great!

Experiencia fantástica: I took group classes here for three weeks. All of the teachers were great, and my classmates became friends. My spoken Spanish increased greatly in a short amount of time. The daily lunches were delicious and the evening and weekend cutural activities were fun and educational. Merida is a friendly, vibrant city and a great place to study Spanish.

Experiencia fantástica: La Calle was a good experience in Mérida. I've been learning Spanish on my own for a while and decided to take in-person classes to help expand my knowledge of Spanish. The classes are small, the teachers are nice, and the overall experience was benign. I enjoyed meeting other students who all had different levels of Spanish understanding. I joined a school tour and found it enjoyable. The teachers differ in style, and if you take more than one week, you will be given a new teacher. During the week, you can try different extracurricular activities, such as a cooking class or a trip to the market. Whether you choose 2 hours, 4 hours, or one-on-one instruction, you're sure to leave with a greater understanding of the local culture than when you started. For me, it helped in terms of speaking confidence and listening comprehension, but I didn't make any significant progress beyond what I had already been learning on my own. Estuvo bien.

Experiencia positiva: Took the extensive course for 2 weeks. Arrived already at about B2. The teachers are good, the people are really nice and the facilities are decent. As other people have mentioned there's lunch for ~120 MXN extra each day, however, during my time there all meals were exclusively vegetarian which I think is important to note. Overall I've improved my Spanish and the experience was positive. However, I don't feel like this deserves 5 starts purely based on the pricing. Funnily enough, this is the cheapest school I've found in Merida. And yet after attending it, I don't think this experience justifies the price tag. Their rate translates to about 850 USD a month which, in Mexico's standards, is insanely expensive. In addition, they refuse to offer flexibility, which again is odd considering they sell it as a premium product. If you're sick and can't attend a day, you can't substitute it for a different day the following week even if you're still in Merida. The person in charge of payments seemed reluctant to allow it and never got back with an answer when I asked to check further. I think if you're just a beginner and want to learn the basics, you're better off using the incredible sources the internet has and put in a little bit of effort. If you're more advanced, need the final push and have the funds, it could be nice. Buena suerte!

Experiencia fantástica: I chose to attend LA CALLE Spanish School in Mérida for one intensive week as a “Buy and Try” experience. Mérida has a warm, relaxed vibe — beautiful colonial architecture, friendly locals, and a slower pace compared to the usual tourist hotspots. From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed and comfortable. The school’s location is convenient, close to the city center, which made it easy to explore after class. Our small group teacher was enthusiastic and tailored each lesson to our level, encouraging us to speak freely, make mistakes, and learn from them. Although one week isn’t long enough to make major progress in Spanish, it gave me a clear sense of direction and focus for continuing on my own. The small classes created a friendly atmosphere — most of my classmates were retired travelers — and the vegetarian lunches were a wonderful highlight, full of flavor and variety. Overall, my week at LA CALLE was a wonderful way to immerse myself in both the language and the relaxed rhythm of Mérida. The one-week class achieved exactly what I hoped it would — it was a great success. I enjoyed it so much that I’m already planning to return next year for a 3–4 week experience..

Experiencia fantástica: My Spanish level really improved during the 4 weeks I stayed there. Thankful for my teachers Selet, Sofía and Miguel, who focused on conversational Spanish and made learning so easy. Also, it was easy to connect with other international students. Last but not least, Erika made the absolute best food everyday.

Experiencia fantástica: La Calle was an awesome school to learn Spanish. Honestly, I did my homework before reserving a space with them. Most other Spanish schools in the area did not reply to my emails, but La Calle did, which showed me that they were actually willing to help me figure out where I wanted to go, and therefore the people I probably wanted to do business with. I wasn't mistaken. They were great. Best prices, best teachers, best school. Yes, there is grammar in the lessons, but it's more about conversation than the Spanish you're used to in school in the USA...it's more functional and related. Also, with no English spoken in class, it forces you to speak in Spanish (note that the instructors CAN speak English...they just pretend that they can't). All together, it was me, my two daughters, and a friend of mine that went. The school was kind enough to set up a kids class for my girls, and they loved it. I asked them fairly regularly, and they said the teacher made learning Spanish fun. In the month we were there, I can tell their Spanish really improved...probably more so than mine or my friend, even (perhaps because of their young flexible brains). When I came, my Spanish was probably on a low A2 level, but I'm almost a B1 level now. My friend's Spanish was on a high A2 level and was told he is almost approaching B2. So in a month's time, that's an amazing amount of progress from all of us. Besides the learning, I would recommend doing other things with the school, as well. They offer an afternoon lunch every day for 120 pesos (about $6 USD). It includes the main dish, sometimes a soup, as well, and a local fruit drink. The food was amazing...better than restaurant food in my opinion. I am a vegan, and have been for about 40 years. The cook was always able to make sure my food was vegan. My friend and my oldest daughter are not vegan, and he loved the food, as well. My youngest daughter is a picky vegetarian, and she thought the food was good, too. There are events pretty often, as well. I would recommend going on the weekend excursions when you can. It was relatively cheap, compared to anything else I could find, but was top notch. For example, one trip, we went to a cenote (not one frequented by tourists, but a semi-private one that was absolutely beautiful), Mayan ruins (Uxmal), and then to an abandoned Hausienda. The tour guide was amazing (he is a Spanish teacher at La Calle, as well, so it was like an extra Spanish lesson on the side). He was very knowledgeable about the places we went to and helped us understand everything we needed/wanted to know. The trip I mentioned in this example was about 1000 pesos, but excluded our entry fees and meal. All together, we spent less than 1500 pesos each, I think (about $75 USD) for a full day of amazing...definitely worth it. The school offers other events, too. They give you a list every Sunday evening by email, and then also at school. And if it's not on the list, ask them...they may be able to do it. For example, we asked for cooking classes. At one of the cooking classes we went to (by the same cook that works at the school...she is amazing) we learned how to make salsas and burrito shells, and then used that to make a meal. It only costed us 250 pesos each ($12.50). You can barely eat at a restaurant for that! So, if you're looking for a place to learn Spanish, this is it. The teachers are amazing at what they do and they are friendly. The classes are very relatable to you...it's not mindless worksheets all the time like in the USA. The food is amazing (I preferred eating here than anywhere else in town). The excursions offered outside of class are amazing with a great price. Talking about price, this school is much cheaper than a lot of other schools I've seen. This is the school you should go to if you want to learn Spanish! I hope my review helps them because I and my family really enjoyed it there. If we are able to get to travel to Mexico again, we will definitely be going back. Thank you La Calle!

Experiencia fantástica: I recently completed 3 weeks of immersive learning here. First two weeks one-on-one with the amazing Giovanna and the third week together with two other students under the instruction of Saul who was equally fantastic. A terrific environment where the relaxed and patient approach to learning takes the fear out of getting thrown in the deep end when it comes to learning Spanish. I highly recommend this school which as added bonus is located in a beautifully historic part of Mexico.

Experiencia fantástica: The BEST experience and investment we have ever made. We just finished 8 weeks of intensive Spanish classes at La Calle and we are so impressed with how much we have learned. We started the school knowing zero Spanish and are leaving now able to have basic conversations. We're already planning a return trip next year :)

Experiencia fantástica: I spent two weeks at La Calle and it was a wonderful experience. The teachers were all very professional and laid back at the same time, creating a comfortable environment to learn. I worked with Miguel, Octavio, and Saul. They all had different approaches, and they were all great! The school itself is beautiful, and the lunches cooked by Erika were some of the best meals I had in Merida. The administration was also very responsive. I researched MANY immersion programs in Mexico and tried various online options with those schools. La Calle was the only one who consistently responded to my inquiries, and I ended up loving my experience with my online teacher Lucia. I definitely recommend!

Experiencia fantástica: Look no further, seriously. If you are already in Mérida this is the school for you. If you are looking for a school somewhere in Mexico, this is the place for you too. The immersive approach was exactly what I needed to move forward and get more comfortable with making mistakes and producing.

Experiencia fantástica: I highly recommend La Calle as a great way to learn and improve your Spanish. The format was very conversational and relaxed. It was a good mix of writing and speaking and the setting was very comfortable. Each day, you had the option to order lunch that was always made fresh at the school. The cost was very reasonable (120 pesos) for a very tasty, homemade meal and drink. I hope to visit Mérida again and do more classes with La Calle.

Experiencia fantástica: I spent two weeks at La Calle and thoroughly enjoyed my experience with them. This was my fourth different immersion experience, second in Mexico and two in Costa Rica. I can honestly say that their program was probably the best. Not only were the teachers able to keep us learning at a fast pace, but the facility was wonderful. Their kitchen offerings were always healthy choices at very competitive pricing. On top of all that, Mérida and the Yucatan peninsula are amazing places with endless exploration available. Absolutely worth the investment!

Experiencia fantástica: I recently took two weeks of the “semi-intensive “ class and would definitely recommend it! I’m an intermediate Spanish speaker living in Mérida and this was immensely helpful. The small group gives you an opportunity to speak with others along with an instructor so you get “real” practice along with formal instruction. Octavio was my instructor and he is awesome. I will definitely keep coming back when I have time! Photo of classmate included here

Experiencia fantástica: What an amazing place to learn Spanish! The colors, food, vibe, space, garden, activities, and pedagogy are all incredible! But my favorite part of La Calle is the people- from teachers to cooks to excursión leaders, every person here is absolutely lovely in their own special way! I can’t wait to come back and visit again soon!

Experiencia fantástica: Best Spanish school I’ve been to. The teachers are all really passionate about the students learning and there is a big focus on conversation and confidence. They take time to make sure the classes are the appropriate size and level. My teachers were Giovanna and Selet - both were fantastic and I hope to return.

Experiencia fantástica: La Calle is the best Spanish immersion experiences I’ve had. My teacher Octavio was amazing…both as a person and a teacher. The school does an amazing job from start to finish. Plus there were additional activities after hours Avery few days. This is so helpful because you can immediately take what you’ve learned that day into practice out in the real world. My wife and I are already planning to return.

Experiencia fantástica: We had the most amazing 6 weeks learning at La Calle. We opted for the intensive classes consisting of 4 hours (with a 30 minute break) every weekday morning. The teachers are all warm and friendly, and we personally cannot recommend Saúl enough. The learning environment is colourful and vibrant with calm spaces to relax before/during the break/after class. Erica, who works in the kitchen, prepares delicious food that can be purchased for a small fee and there is free tea/coffee/water all day. The classes are very informal with the majority of time spent encouraging conversation, and short activities focusing on grammar as well. This really suited us and we noticed a considerable difference in our spoken Spanish after a short time. If you're in Merida and you're looking to improve your Spanish, don't hesitate to join their intensive classes. You won't regret it.

Experiencia fantástica: I just finished 2 1/2 weeks with La Calle and really enjoyed my time there. I have had previous experience with Spanish before I started my time here and the teachers were very good at gauging my level and teaching in a way that challenged me. My Spanish definitely improved during my time here. I also recommend a homestay because it gave me the opportunity to live with a family here, practice my Spanish, and feel more immersed in the culture. Overall a great experience!

Experiencia fantástica: Great school! I did two weeks of intensive Spanish course at La Calle in October 2024 at the beginning of my traveling in Mexico and everything was amazing. I had basically no previous knowledge of Spanish except for the numbers 0-20 and a couple of basic sentences which I studied on my flight from Europe to Merída. The first group, which I was assigned to, was challenging. There were for example a person, who had already two weeks of Spanish courses at the school and persons living in Mexico as well, so I felt quite challenged in order to keep up, but this was exactly what I needed and wanted. The classes were based on communication between the students and fun exercises, the grammar parts were not held too long, the homework tasks were not too long at all. You don’t need to buy any study books, which is a plus. The teachers would speak only Spanish with us, which at the beginning is a bit challenging but also contributing to the progress of learning. After the first week and just having a feeling that I caught up with the level and start to feel really comfortable, I was assigned to another group for the second week, with some new and more advanced students - so I kept to be challenged (in a very productive and positive way) until the very last day and was able to get the maximum out of the lessons. All the three different teachers I experienced - Amanda, Saúl and Octavio - were highly professional, very friendly, open for feedback any time, very understandable and patient with our questions or with us not understanding things. What also made the process of learning very enjoyable for me personally was the positive, open-minded and joyful attitude of the teachers, their sense of humor and the lightness, which they brought into the learning process (I wish I could have experienced more of this during school and university education in Europe as well…:). The ambient of the school with its lovely patio was inviting for conversations at the breaks or after classes. There were also activities in the evenings or on the weekends for extra language practicing organized by the school. Organization and communication including payment procedure were all easy, effective and client-orientated, here thanks to community manager Fer. Now five weeks after the completion of the course and practicing with just speaking while traveling I can say that I am able to manage almost all of the simple traveling needs and conversations in Spanish. 1000% recommendation! Thank you, La Calle :) !

Experiencia fantástica: What an amazing experience! I took my first lessons last week. The teaching environment was very relaxed and not in a typical school-like setting which I believe set the ideal stage for an informal approach to learning the language. The lessons are taught in a practical way that employ listening, speaking and playing games to re‐enforce concepts taught. My classmates' involvement also contributed greatly to my ability to learn as they brought their own levels of abilities to our lessons. To conclude....initially with my limited ability to comprehend and use Spanish, after a week of Spanish lessons with my teacher Saoul and my awesome classmates , I can confidently say I have begun to gain the confidence needed to comprehend and use the Spanish language now. It is my intention to take more classes as I can definitely see my improvement in just one week. La Calle Spanish School ROCKS!!!

Experiencia fantástica: We studied here for a week at the beginning of August. Because it was so hot, there were few students, but it didn't matter, it was still an amazing experience. The classes are immersion with a lot of speaking and listening and a little bit of grammar and writing to consolidate some of the immersion learning. This method worked very well for me and increased my confidence in speaking Spanish greatly. The place itself has a home-like vibe. It's relaxed, comfortable, easy going. I recommend it highly.

Experiencia fantástica: I just spent three weeks at La Calle escuela - and my spanish improved dramatically. The teachers only speak in spanish and that makes a huge difference. I loved the small class sizes - mine had a maximum of three students. It was so good that I changed my travel plans and extended my studies by an extra week. Erica in the cocina cooks lovely fresh vegetarian dishes every day (accompanied by Chac the cat (gatita)) and the school also arranged local excursions and events you can join. The added bonus was meeting some incredible people. I already want to return again next year for at least 2 months more.

Experiencia fantástica: Overall my experience with the school "La Calle" was fantastic. The person at the front desk (Fer) is very knowledgeable. If they do not know the answers, they find out quickly. The teachers are fun and make the classes fun. I found Giovanna's teaching methods exceptional and truly enjoyed the many hours I spent in her class. I also found Siled's class to be quite enjoyable. These were my two favorite teachers, but I do form attachments easily. :-) That being said, ALL of the teachers/staff that I had contact with were great. I would very much encourage anyone thinking about this adventure to: Just do it!!! My home stay family was incredible, but several of the students I attended classes with had different experiences. Luck of the draw I guess. Esta experiencia me cae bien! Randy

Experiencia fantástica: I loved my experience at La Calle. I arrived as a barely A2 Spanish student lacking confidence in speaking. After 5 weeks of intensive group classes I had moved onto B1 and felt comfortable navigating almost every part of daily life in México with Spanish speakers. The classes are small, the learning method is conversation-based with some worksheets as scaffolding to support grammar concepts. Writing assignments for homework improve your writing skills and serve as the basis for class discussions. The teachers ensured all students had speaking time and rotated classes week to week. The teachers are definitely a highlight of the school: They corrected us kindly, gave recommendations around Mérida, and shared pieces of their lives with us, which made the classroom a place of camaraderie and cultural exchange. La Calle has great programs for total beginners as well, but I believe arriving with a little theoretical Spanish helps immensely with this method, because you can focus on speaking and listening and higher-level grammar, rather than acquiring vocabulary. The students generally seemed to be a mix of European, Canadian, and USians; some of the folks we met were in their mid 20s on a gap year or digital nomad adventure, while others were retirees. We started classes in February, which was a busy month at La Calle. By the time the Mérida heat began to set in in March, there were fewer students; it's a good time to come if you want more 1-on-1 attention. It was easy to chat with other students during breaks and lunch and form little groups to do different activities together, like visit cafés or beaches. Another student commented to me that this level of camaraderie is unique, and that she hadn't previously experienced it at other language schools in México. The school building itself is lovely, colorful and with a sweet garden. It's located in the more touristy part of centro, which is convenient for most visitors. As is common in México, there is no air conditioning, but the ceiling fans in every room and building construction keep things relatively cool. Erika, who runs the kitchen, is a genius and we ate the delicious, affordable vegetarian meals many times. Fer leads the admin and community side, scheduling activities after classes and on weekends. We had an amazing group tour of Uxmal ruins, a cenote and a historic hacienda, totally in (slow, patient) Spanish. Committing to several weeks of intensive Spanish classes is an investment and a big undertaking. There is no better place in Mérida to do so than La Calle. I am confident the time, effort, and money we put into this great place has been a great investment for our Spanish skills and for our knowledge of México and the world.

Experiencia negativa: I have been very disappointed with the school. I am registered for the one month class for 4 hours per week. After week two, they switched the teacher. The teacher was great. I believe they have a policy on switching teachers. The 2nd teacher is not great. The response I received when I emailed the owner was not good. I feel like i was dissed. I am not going to go to my last week of classes because I hated it. I tuned right out. I am going to look for sn alternative school. This school came recommended. I DON’T recommend the school.

Experiencia fantástica: La Calle exceeded my expectations! We scheduled a week of one-on-one classes. Our teachers were patient; they focused studies around our interests and goals, and only Spanish was spoken. Additionally, the home stays arranged through La Calle were amazing experiences. The atmosphere is friendly, and the cafe serves delicious food. La Calle is a terrific opportunity for those wanting to improve their Spanish. I know that mine improved significantly! I hope to return.

Experiencia fantástica: Absolutely loved our experience there! The instructors were very nice and very thorough. We had a lot of laughs while learning. They hosted movie nights, conversation nights and Saturday excursions in addition to the classes they offer. They also have a little restaurant, and the lady cooks delicious meals! Plus Merida is a great city to adventure around in as well. Our Spanish improved immensely! We had a wonderful experience. Thank you La Calle!

Experiencia fantástica: I really enjoyed my learning experience at La Calle. Speaking only in Spanish really forced me out of my intimidated shell overtime. I realized that just answering with "sí" or "no" was not going to get me far. So I am grateful for the push to speak in full sentences in Spanish and to have also received the corrections I needed in order to improve my Spanish. I have been to other schools, yet La Calle really helped me to understand the grammar and necessity to speak only in Spanish to really immerse myself in the language. I also enjoyed the extra activities, such as the Market tour and the Salsa class. Thank you.

Experiencia fantástica: Amazing school to learn Spanish! Very intimate - about 15 people per week - and 3 people with one Spanish teacher. Teacher never speaks English in class, not a word! Got to know people from different cultures through Spanish conversations. Extra activities are suggested such as a Ciné Night, projected in the small patio outside. Warmly recommend it

Experiencia fantástica: I walked in with zero classroom experience but a lot of knowledge in my head from self-study. I had no ability to move it to my tongue and no confidence. I thought I wanted private lessons but actually being in class was so much better at my level (A2 after 9 days of class!). The worksheets and games focus on ‘trouble areas’ of use/grammar and incorporate lots of other useful elements through their creativity and breadth. 4 hours flew by in a fun manner. It was the right method of instruction to get me talking. I agree with other reviews of the school and instructors so I’d like to share what is special about Merida as a location for your studies. Local people are calm, friendly, kind, and very respectful. English is not widely spoken and their Spanish is quite slow and clear. Erika’s cooking at the school is like at the best restaurants and I never had a bad meal anywhere! I heard incredible Yucatán music and saw astonishing dance in multiple venues. These cultural offerings are strongly supported by the community to celebrate themselves and this makes the city a real and healthy place. I fell for the people/culture of Yucatán! And the tortillas… how will I do without them?!

Experiencia fantástica: I love taking classes at La Calle! My Spanish has improved so much since I began. The teachers are wonderful, the classes feel light and fun while still challenging you to express yourself 100% in Spanish. They use an immersion model which they adapt to different skill levels and it's worked great for my friends and I. A bonus is that the school is beautiful, in a nice area, and they offer yummy food/snacks. They also separately offer little trips to historical sites, cenotes, etc, which I highly recommend taking advantage of.

Experiencia negativa: I was really looking forward to learn spanish in Merida. But after one week in this school, the whole thing turned into frustration. They won't give you books or anything similar. Sometimes they give you some papers to fill out, but nothing worth keeping. The classes did not really have a structure in my opinion. We were 4 students in the whole school. They put me in class with a student who was already a way higher level (I'm a beginner). Maybe i expected too much, but from my english classes in the US (native german speaker), i'm used to a good structure and good documentation. The prices are way to high for mexican standards. But if you are a tourist you probably don't care that much. I canceled classes after the first week and took a private teacher. But of course there's good. It's very much in the center and it's easy to get there. The teachers where always friendly too. And they have a kitchen where they serve you lunch if needed.

Experiencia fantástica: I took 2 weeks of lessons here in the summer and it was excellent! The first week was group lessons and the second week private lessons. I’ve also continued with them online because all 3 teachers I’ve had have been great teachers. They are good at meeting you at your level and moving you forward at a reasonable pace. I cannot recommend this school enough, from the teachers to the homestay to the lunches to the office staff, everyone was so nice and helpful and the food was delicious.

Experiencia fantástica: I traveled to Mérida Mexico for 2 weeks to strengthen my spanish skills and visit mexico for the very first time. I enrolled in the intensive group class for the 2 weeks at la calle spanish school. The class was challenging enough where I left feeling more confident with speaking skills and learned a ton of new vocabulary. My instructor was miguel, he was very chill and funny. The class wasnt just grammar bootcamp, most of the time it was casual conversation. There were times my brain felt exhausted from the constant learning but thats growth, a que si? The school offered tours to chichén itza and we also travel to Yokdzonot cenote and Valladolid. This recorrido was much cheaper than what I found through other sites. Highly recommended taking advantage of that if you go. I Plan on returning next year and but will try the semi intensive afternoon classes next time. Erica makes amazing meals in the kitchen and they are veggie and delicious!!Thank you again to everyone at la calle!

Experiencia fantástica: We just finished our one week intensive course (4 hours a day for 5 days) at La Calle and cannot recommend it enough! Beforehand we got to take a written and an oral test to assess our level of Spanish. According to these we were assigned to a group/teacher. Both our teachers Raúl and Saúl were fantastic and did not only teach Spanish but also shared their broad knowledge on Mexican and yucatecan culture. In our opinion the way they teach is very effective. You get to speak a lot instead of just going through a lot of grammar (which they of course teach as well). Moreover we joined one of their afternoon tours which was also great. The school’s cook Erica is a lovely lady who cooks a large variety of fresh vegetarian Mexican food every day (soup/salad + juice + main dish for 90 pesos). Everyone is super friendly and welcoming and everything is perfectly organized. If you have the time, we highly recommend to spend at least one week at La Calle. They also offer individual classes (at least 1 hour a day) to cater your needs.

Experiencia fantástica: Great Spanish school for all levels! My husband and I took 6 weeks of Spanish classes at La Calle and they were great! The instructors are friendly, fun and meet you at the level you're at. We improved drastically in our comprehension, speaking and vocabulary in the few weeks that we took classes. The staff is kind, flexible, and communicated well with us throughout. Would highly recommend to anyone interested in learning/practicing Spanish!

Experiencia fantástica: I recently attended a Spanish school with my friend for just one week, and I have to say that I was thoroughly impressed. The evaluation process was rigorous, as we had to complete both a written and oral test to determine our skill level. While it was challenging, it ensured that we were placed in the right class for our abilities. The school itself was well-organized and clean, making for a comfortable learning environment. But what really made the experience special were the teachers - they were incredibly helpful and friendly, always willing to answer questions and provide extra support when needed. Overall, my friend and I really enjoyed our time at the Spanish school and would highly recommend it to anyone looking to improve their language skills!

Experiencia fantástica: I had a fantastic experience at La Calle. From my first contact with the School, the staff was very responsive and promptly answered all of my questions. The teaching staff was excellent and quickly assessed my areas that needed strengthening. Their approach was refreshingly different from my other Spanish language school experiences. La Calle is VERY conveniently located right in the heart of the Central Historic District. I must admit that photos were a little off putting, but when I arrived and met the staff and some other students, I completely forgot about the appearance. It was a comfortable and informal setting. I wholeheartedly recommend this school and would not hesitate to return on my next visit to Merida.

Experiencia fantástica: I attended in-person classes for two weeks at La Calle early in 2020 (before Covid restrictions) and have taken on-line classes almost since when the Covid restrictions first began. I am still taking an on-line La Calle class two days/week. I have loved an continue to love both experiences. I have had at least four different teachers (all great) and many different classmates. I look forward to class. They are fun, and my ability to converse in Spanish has improved dramatically. I hope to go back to La Calle for in-person classes this year or next. In the meantime, I will continue with my on-line classes. Highly recommended.

Experiencia fantástica: La Calle is a great choice for studying Spanish. Giovanna was my instructor for two weeks and I felt fortunate to have her two weeks in a row. She was absolutely wonderful! I am a person that can’t sit quietly for very long but she made those 4 hours pass quickly with so many fun and engaging activities . I was always disappointed when classes ended as it went by so fast! Her approach to learning was amazing, and her ability to keep us all interested, having fun, and participating was great! I thoroughly enjoyed my time learning with her at La Calle.

Experiencia fantástica: I had 3 days of private lessons with Miguel - 2 hours conversation practice each day with my wife. We are B1 level grammar, A2 listening comprehension and A2/A1 spoken proficiency (approx). We wanted to improve our listening and speaking skills. Miguel was a lot of fun to work with and brings great energy and professionalism to the classroom. He genuinely loves to teach and share his enthusiasm for art, food, society and Mexican culture. He knows when to slow down to build your confidence and when to stretch you a little with faster and more detailed conversations. He strikes the right balance between letting you make a few mistakes and taking a moment to explain something important or interesting. The school itself is small and friendly with nice classrooms and a good atmosphere for learning - there is a little area for coffee and breakfast and some food is available at lunchtime for sharing. The building is centrally located and easy to find. All in all this was a great experience and has given me confidence and a desire to learn more.

I recommend it whole-heartedly. Andy Douglas Iowa, USA

I highly recommend this school for both beginners and those who already are speaking some Spanish.

Experiencia fantástica: I've been studying at LA Calle for 3 weeks and I really liked the school. Not only it's a nice place to meet new people and find out information about Mérida, but school itself is a well-established system. They support communication /language acquisition approach so you practice speaking a lot but at the same time you get to learn grammar as well. Experiencia fantástica: I spent 8 weeks learning Spanish there and it was a fantastic experience! The teachers were really friendly, I felt comfortable to make mistakes (and ask the same question a million times). I liked how all the grammer exercises were organised in such a way it felt like I was just chatting with friends, I was never bored in class while still learning lots. They also organise trips occasionally for way cheaper than tour operators, the trips are conducted in easy to understand Spanish so act as a way of putting to use what you've learned as well as seeing some pretty cool parts of the Yucatan. Overall I would highly recommend studying Spanish at la calle!

Experiencia negativa: I don’t recommend this school for women or transgender people. I had to leave a class early due to the instructor wanting us to play an inappropriate game. When I contacted the school with my concerns, I didn’t receive an apology. I requested multiple times to know if they would remove this exercise from their classes and if they would add some kind of policy to prevent this happening in the future. My requests were pointedly ignored. I will also say that the classes lack structure and their processes are generally pretty disorganized. You may get any given instructor depending on the day and the subject matter may not build on the concepts you learned in the last class. They also don’t have enough students to fill their classes so on Sunday they tell you your schedule for the week which may randomly change. This is pretty inconvenient if you’re trying to plan other weekly commitments around classes because you may find out at the last minute that your schedule has changed. However, these issues are secondary to the main one, which is about the school creating a psychologically safe environment for students. I can’t emphasize this enough: go elsewhere.

Experiencia fantástica: I had one of the most wonderful times in La Calle - Spanish School Merida. I was only able to stay for a week but wished I could have stayed longer. The teachers were amazing, so patient, and provided a very comfortable learning environment. One of the best decisions I have ever made. I definitely would recommend it to anyone to attend classes here at La Calle. My teacher was Giovanna. She did an amazing job. I also chose accommodations through the school. I had lived in a house not too far from the school owned by my host named Pablo Reyes. He was a great host and helped me with advice regarding how to get around the city and places to see. Experiencia fantástica: I highly recommend this Spanish school for beginners and advanced second language Spanish speakers! La Calle uses the immersion language learning technique which I love and it is proven to expedite your Spanish skills. Already I have advanced from level one to level two. During that time my instructors have been Lucia, Saul and Raul. They are excellent instructors and have been very attentive to my learning needs. Now I'm in the process of taking private lessons for business Spanish. I'm very pleased with how fast my Spanish is improving and looking forward to learning more. Remember it is up to you - the student - to continuously practice the immersion learning technique when outside the classroom. Attendance and homework is not enough. Always, always, always speak in Spanish while you're here, speak Spanish with your classmates outside of class, and seek out other Spanish speakers to socialize with. You will start dreaming and thinking in Spanish in no time!

Experiencia negativa: No at all what I was expecting, the classes are basically what you learn on duo lingo. I was hoping for some simple conversational Spanish to help communication whilst traveling, but instead you are learning "what is your job, how old are you" great if you have 6 weeks to spend learning in depth Spanish, but as a traveller just hoping to learn some useful basics I found this course a bit of a waste of time and money. It would be much better if the school spoke you you about what kind of Spanish you need\ want to learn Also one of the guys who worked there (I think he was called Miguel) was super condescending, I found the way he spoke down to you as so rude. He gave me a really bad vibe and made me very uncomfortable just being around him.

Experiencia positiva: Overall, I really enjoyed my experience. Teacher was knowledgeable and everyone was very nice. The one week of classes lacked structure and the level was too difficult for me and the three other students. It’s hard to have conversations with other students without the foundations of grammar and conjugation. So our conversations were quite short and slow. It would have been better if they matched us at our level, filled in the knowledge gaps, and had us do easier exercises to reinforce this new concept one at a time. I’m very passionate about the learning experience generally so I can be critical at times. I took what I could from my week there which was very positive. However, I am confident we all could have gained more with some structure that built upon where we were at vs. jumping levels and trying to do many things at once… before we became fluent at one or two of the things.

Experiencia fantástica: The relaxed inclusive atmosphere at the LA Calle school is immediately apparent when you walk in their door. The greeting of Buenos dias from all nationalities and ages you encounter, instantly lowers the intimidation level when starting a new language there. The schools method of teaching is to learn through speaking. Questions and answers. Listening and repeating. Learning while practicing pronunciation. It's a very effective method. My teacher Profesor Raul, is both extremely patient and persistent. His constant "casi...otra forma?" Helped me get the most out of each lesson. It was very apparent that Raul cares about his students, and wants them to feel they have learned, and have had a positive experience. I really enjoyed his lessons. I look forward to continuing my spanish education online with La Calle, until I can return to Mexico and the school again in the fall. Drew

Experiencia fantástica: We had such an amazing teacher who was super fun to learn from! I feel bad, I wish I could remember his name, I think it was Saul or Luis, just not sure exactly. My girlfriend and I we’re only in Merida for 2 nights but really wanted a chance to get more immersed and do our best to not butcher the language. We are still nowhere near fluent but feel so much more comfortable attempting to converse with locals. We are still super beginners but the 3 hours we spent was worth every peso and we recommend it! It was very enjoyable. I wish we could spend more time here and if able I will certainly come back. At the least I would love to spend a month here In the intensive program and hope to make that a reality one day. Book a lesson! You will be glad you did!
